Doctoral Degree

In our Department, students are offered the opportunity to continue their studies by pursuing a doctoral dissertation within the structured doctoral program it provides. Doctoral candidates may attend a specialized cycle of advanced courses and specialized seminars by leading mathematicians. The cultivation of Theoretical Mathematics alongside its more applied aspects constitutes a pioneering approach; the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is unique in Greece in offering such a framework. The Department’s aim is to attract high-caliber students for doctoral studies across a broad spectrum, ranging from the most theoretical to the most applied areas of Mathematics.

Doctoral candidates may take advantage of the Department’s international collaborations and mobility opportunities, and also benefit from the bidirectional research and educational relationship between the Department and the Institute of Computational Mathematics of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH). The presence of two academic units in Crete—the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and the Institute of Computational Mathematics—which collaborate closely with each other, results in the continuous advancement and promotion of mathematical science and its applications to other scientific fields and technology.

Indicative of the high level of our doctoral studies is the fact that two-thirds of the Department’s PhD graduates have held or currently hold academic positions at universities and research centers abroad. The Department’s Regulations for Doctoral Studies aim to ensure that its PhD graduates, in addition to completing a dissertation of high academic quality, are also equipped with a broad and solid scientific background.
