Welcome
The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Crete was established in June 2013 by the merger of the Department of Mathematics (founded in 1977) and the Department of Applied Mathematics (founded in 1999). The department accepts two incoming streams of undergraduate students (Mathematics, Applied Mathematics). It is simultaneously the oldest and the youngest department of the University of Crete and the largest department in the School of Science and Technology.
The Department is housed in its new, privately-owned building on the Voutes university campus, which meets all the modern needs of education and research. It offers two undergraduate programs (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics) and three postgraduate programs (Mathematics and Their Applications, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Mathematics and Education). It is a department with an interdisciplinary character, reflected in the education provided and the research produced. The Department incorporates the strong tradition of the two older departments with key characteristics:
• High-quality mathematical education, with faculty members maintaining close and continuous contact with their students
• High-quality research with international collaborations, recognition, and the attraction of research funding
• Strong international mobility through exchange visits, the organization of international conferences, and a long history of attracting young Greek and foreign postdoctoral researchers.
Sincerely,
Alkis Tersenov, Professor
